At Haselbury Plucknett C of E Primary School, our children experience a rich maths curriculum which enables them to apply their skills and knowledge in real-life contexts. We use the mastery approach to mathematics which involves teaching small steps for each mathematical concept including basic fluency or understanding, mathematical reasoning and a variety of problem-solving approaches. These three areas are all interlinked and enable children to become excellent mathematical thinkers. When teaching maths, we use concrete materials to aid children’s understanding, leading through to use of pictorial representations and finally written abstract maths.
Each week, children are taught mastery lessons based on the long-term plan where they learn new mathematical concepts in depth. They are also taught discrete sessions to aid continuous learning and practice of key skills such as times tables, addition and subtraction facts and formal calculation methods.
Based on the learning objectives in the National Curriculum, we use NCETM and White Rose Maths schemes of learning to inform our small steps planning from EYFS to Year 6. In Foundation, we look to the GLOW maths hub planning as well as NCETM Mastering Number to inform our planning sequence based on learning objectives found in the Early Years Framework. Wherever possible, we use opportunities to apply our mathematics learning in other subjects across the curriculum such as science, DT and computing.
How you can help your child with their maths:
We send a small piece of maths work to be completed at home each week. Your support with this is much appreciated.
Children have access to timestables.co.uk from Year 2. This is a maths app/website.
